Why work for Papilio home?
We believe in the High Street, both in Thornbury and beyond, and the importance of independent businesses in adding excellent customer service and individuality to them. We also believe in providing the customer with excellent quality products at reasonable prices; this applies to both Papilio home and Papilio coffee.
Being a welcoming place for people to gather and shop is integral to everything we do. Under our ownership, Papilio at Heritage (previously Heritage in Thornbury) has transformed from a shop that parents were hesitant to bring their children into, to a place with Brio play tables and baskets of toys for children to play with and enjoy themselves, whilst their parents shop or sit and have a coffee. Our baby changing table is in our unisex toilet as we recognise that Dads also change nappies! During August we have weekly, free, events in the garden for children. Full accessibility is something we are also constantly working towards. Our new, decked ramp ensures there are no steps between the coffee shop and the deck outside, enabling everyone to enjoy the garden. In Papilio home ensuring there is space to move around with buggies and wheelchairs takes priority over filling floor space with display stands! Staff are also trained in interacting with customers with dementia and other needs.
In Papilio home we have a passion for quality products covering a wide range of categories including cards, home fragrance, fashion accessories, interiors and children’s gifts. We choose our suppliers carefully and are constantly striving for excellence in our merchandising and in seeking out new products that can’t be found elsewhere on the High Street. In May 2017 we were a finalist in The Greats Retail Awards for Best Independent in the South West. It was a real honour to get that far as we were competing against some incredible shops! We are also actively involved with the Giftware Association and Greeting Cards Association and Tabi (co-owner) is developing a name within the giftware industry and is now regularly asked for her thoughts for industry magazines.
In Papilio coffee we pride ourselves on (and are well-known for) our home-made cakes and scones - only the gluten-free cakes are bought in from our large suppliers. Our food (brunch and light lunches) are made from fresh ingredients, locally sourced where possible, with generous portion sizes at excellent value. Our upside down tea timers for our loose leaf tea are an example of the attention to detail and desire to be a bit different that is integral to how we operate. On both sides of the business we have a strong core of regular customers who come in daily and weekly allowing our staff to interact with customers in a way that is often not possible in large chains. Working with us you will have the opportunity to build relationships with the customers, work in a highly thought-of and growing business, develop your skills and work with the owners (one of whom works for the business full-time overseeing both sides) in continuing to take the business forward.
